The Husafell Stone, weighing 186 kilograms (410 pounds), is one of the most famous lifting stones in strength competitions. Originally used as a goat pen door on the farm of Icelandic strongman Snorri Björnsson over 200 years ago, the stone became a legendary challenge for those seeking to test their strength. Though Icelandic in origin, the Husafell Stone has become a key part of Scottish strength traditions, where lifting stones have long symbolised power and endurance.
The stone is tied to three levels of strength:
- Fullsterkur (Full Strength): Achieved by carrying the stone for a full 50 meters around the goat pen’s perimeter, showing incredible strength and endurance.
- Hálfsterkur (Half Strength): Carrying the stone halfway around the course demonstrates significant power, though without the full endurance needed for the complete task.
- Amlóði (Weakling Strength): Lifting the stone onto one's lap without carrying it further reflects baseline strength.
At Saltire Estate, a Scottish family-owned winery established in 2006, we proudly celebrate Scottish heritage. The lifting of the Husafell Stone can even be witnessed at the Hunter Valley Highland Games, an event that brings Scottish culture to life. While enjoying the games, don’t miss the chance to try our boutique range of wines, crafted with the same dedication and passion.
